At one time or another, every parent has asked some of these questions.

Do I...
... set high expectations or lower the bar?
... step in and fix it, or step aside and let it play out?
... restrict more or offer more freedom?
... rock the boat or choose peace and quiet?
... accept silence or learn to hear and be heard?

Parenting a teenager can be confusing, frustrating and utterly draining. But it doesn't have to be this way, and you don't have to do it alone.

I am Parent Coach, Fern Weis, and I coach parents of teens and young adults. I have asked myself all of these questions. As a coach, parent and middle school teacher, I understand and have lived the concerns of parents as they see their teen slipping away. I have been through very challenging times with my own children (who are now two great young adults). There came a time when we knew we had to reach out for help with our oldest. We feared for his safety and the well-being of our entire family. This help came in the form of the Hyde School, a program of family-based character education.

Our two years at Hyde were a transformational experience for me, and put me on the path to becoming a life/parenting coach. I am a certified life coach through the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. I continue to participate in the Hyde experience as a volunteer facilitator of family weekends at the Woodstock, CT campus.

My life work and passion is to help parents create a principle-centered life and develop crucial listening and communication skills. Why? Because these are the qualities which, if we live them and model them for our children, will help them become people of character -- compassionate, independent, responsible, respectful and loving adults.

My practice is based on "The Ten Priorities of Effective Parenting" (Hyde School), and the communication skills program, "How to Talk So Teens Will Listen and Listen So Teens Will Talk" (Faber & Mazlish). Separately, these programs have helped thousands of families to re-establish respectful, loving and responsible relationships between parents and teens. Combined, they are an amazing force for change.

Parents will learn powerful principles and skills to take the confusion out of decision-making, improve listening and communication skills, and bring out the goodness and potential they know are hidden inside their teen. Together we work to bring peace and joy back into parenting and the entire family.

Coaching services include individual and group coaching, as well as email coaching. Parent education programs include How to Talk So Teens Will Listen and The Biggest Job/Parenting From Principles.
